Contrary to what some people might think, sleep paralysis is a common and harmless condition. Nevertheless, when it occurs unexpectedly, it can be a disturbing experience.
This particular situation most often occurs when falling asleep or waking up: you are conscious, your eyes may even be open, but your body does not respond. Unable to move, speak, or react, you feel trapped inside your own body. This disconnect between an awake mind and a paralyzed body often causes intense anxiety.
To make the experience even stranger, some people describe sensory hallucinations. Terrifying shadows that seem to be watching you, incomprehensible whispers… All these details make the episode feel like a nightmare experienced with your eyes wide open.
Where Does This Curious Phenomenon Come From?
Rest assured: you are not going crazy, and there is no supernatural presence involved (although some urban legends still suggest otherwise!).
Sleep paralysis can be explained by completely normal bodily mechanisms. During REM sleep — the stage in which we dream — the brain temporarily inhibits most of the body's muscles to prevent us from physically acting out our dreams.
During an episode of sleep paralysis, the mind wakes up while the body remains under the influence of this temporary muscle inhibition.
The result: you are awake… inside a sleeping body.
